From the 1850s to the 1950s, the Jewish community left a lasting mark on the trade, architecture, and wartime history of Shanghai. This private day tour traces that story through the places where it actually happened.
In the morning, meet your guide at your hotel in Shanghai or at Shanghai Railway Station, whichever you choose. Your guide will hold a welcome sign reading "Shanghai Private Tour". From there, the Jewish heritage walk begins with a private car and driver for the day.

The first stop is the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum, which commemorates the Jewish refugees who fled Europe and lived in Shanghai during World War II. It stands on the site of the former Moishe Synagogue (Ohel Moshe) in the Tilanqiao Historic Area of Hongkou district. Inside, documents, photographs, films, and personal items record the lives of the more than 20,000 Jewish residents of the Restricted Sector for Stateless Refugees, often called the Shanghai Ghetto, during the Japanese occupation.
Next, drive to the Peace Hotel on the Bund, built by the British-Jewish magnate Victor Sassoon and known before 1949 as the Cathay Hotel. Its Art Deco tower still carries the look of the years when Shanghai was called the Paris of the East.
After lunch at a local restaurant, continue to Huoshan Park. Built in 1917, the park was used as a burial ground for Jews during World War II, and the parents of Mr. Labin, a late premier of Israel, are buried here. During the war, Jewish refugees in Shanghai often gathered in this space, and a house once used to shelter refugees is still kept within the park. It is open to the public free of charge, with street-food vendors at the gate.
Inside the park stands a monument commemorating the Designated Area for Stateless Refugees, the wartime district that confined Jewish refugees who had escaped Europe. In the 1940s, refugees came to this area to rest and meet one another, and the monument records that history.
The tour ends with a walk along the Bund, the waterfront in central Shanghai along the western bank of the Huangpu River, centered on Zhongshan Road. Traditionally it runs from Yan'an Road in the south to Waibaidu Bridge in the north. On the west side stand rows of early twentieth-century buildings in Gothic, Baroque, Romanesque, Renaissance, and Neoclassical styles; across the river rise the Pudong towers, the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, Jinmao Tower, and the Shanghai World Financial Center. This contrast is why Shanghai earned the nickname Paris of the East.
After the walk, your driver takes you back to your hotel in Shanghai or to Shanghai Railway Station, whichever you arranged at booking.
