This thoughtful arrangement maximizes your time and keeps your day flexible and enriching. This seamless start ensures you begin your Shanghai journey feeling cared for, informed, and ready to explore.
Start your day at The Bund, the beating heart of colonial-era Shanghai, where history and skyline blend into one unforgettable panorama. Once a sleepy fishing village, the area transformed into the city’s financial hub in the early 20th century, earning it the nickname "Wall Street of the East." Walking along the wide riverside promenade, you'll be captivated by the stunning row of 52 historic buildings, each reflecting architectural styles from Gothic and Baroque to Neoclassical and Art Deco. Notable landmarks include the former HSBC Building and the Customs House, both of which whisper tales of Shanghai’s international past. While the buildings retain their historic charm, many now house luxury boutiques, Michelin-starred restaurants, and stylish rooftop bars, seamlessly marrying past with present. Street vendors here tempt visitors with Shanghainese snacks like fried stinky tofu and roasted sweet potatoes—simple bites that carry deep local flavor. Whether you’re snapping skyline shots or sipping tea under century-old columns, The Bund offers a dazzling start to your Shanghai adventure.
From The Bund, step straight into the vibrant pulse of Nanjing Road—Shanghai’s premier shopping avenue, stretching over 5 kilometers from the riverside to Jing’an Temple. First paved in the 1850s to serve British settlements, Nanjing Road has evolved into a mesmerizing fusion of East-meets-West commercial culture. Towering department stores, high-end fashion labels, and cutting-edge flagship stores line the bustling pedestrian zone, while time-honored Chinese brands like Lao Feng Xiang (jewelry) and Zhang Xiao Quan (scissors) hold nostalgic appeal for locals. Don't miss the dazzling neon signs that light up at night—a visual feast harking back to 1930s Shanghai, when the road was a symbol of glamor and modernity. The street food scene is just as vivid: indulge in local delights like shengjian bao (pan-fried buns with juicy pork) or flaky daoxiao noodles, hand-cut before your eyes. More than just a shopping destination, Nanjing Road is a living museum of consumer culture, architectural shifts, and Shanghai’s unstoppable momentum.
As evening sets in, wrap up your day with an unforgettable boat cruise on the Huangpu River—a must-do experience that puts Shanghai’s skyline on full display. The river divides the city into two contrasting halves: the historic Puxi side, home to The Bund, and the futuristic Pudong side, where gleaming skyscrapers like the Oriental Pearl Tower, Shanghai Tower, and Jin Mao Tower soar into the sky. Aboard the cruise ship, you’ll glide past these architectural marvels as they light up in dazzling color, their reflections dancing on the water. The commentary onboard offers rich insight into the rise of Pudong from farmland to financial powerhouse, as well as stories about how the river itself shaped Shanghai’s destiny as a global port. The cruise lasts about 45 minutes to an hour—just enough time to sip tea or a cocktail while soaking in panoramic views. It’s a poetic close to your day, offering a rare perspective where history, commerce, and dreamlike beauty meet beneath the stars.
After the scenic boat cruise on the Huangpu River, your guide will escort you to your hotel. Upon arrival, they will assist you with the check-in process, ensuring everything is smooth and efficient. You’ll have time to settle in, relax, and enjoy the comfort of your accommodations. After a day filled with cultural exploration and iconic sights, this restful evening offers the perfect chance to recharge. Get a good night’s sleep and look forward to another exciting day of discovery in Shanghai tomorrow.
Your morning kicks off with a visit to the serene Jade Buddha Temple, one of Shanghai’s most important and spiritual landmarks. Established in 1882, this Buddhist temple is home to two exquisitely crafted jade Buddha statues, one of which is a reclining Buddha over 2 meters long. Made from precious Burmese jade, the statues gleam with an ethereal glow as the soft scent of incense fills the air. As your guide walks you through the temple’s peaceful halls, you’ll learn how this sacred place survived through the turmoil of Chinese history, including the upheaval of the Cultural Revolution, when many religious sites were destroyed. The temple’s intricate architecture features golden roofs, wooden beams, and statues of deities, with each aspect holding symbolic meaning. The temple remains an active place of worship, with monks chanting prayers and devotees lighting incense as offerings. Your guide will explain the significance of various rituals and customs, and offer insight into how Buddhist teachings still influence daily life in Shanghai. After your visit, you’ll feel a sense of calm and wonder, having experienced one of the city's most tranquil spots amidst its bustling streets.
After your visit to the Jade Buddha Temple, head over to Yuyuan Bazaar & Snack Street, a vibrant marketplace where traditional Chinese culture and modern commercialism come together in dazzling harmony. The area surrounding Yuyuan Garden dates back to the Ming Dynasty, and it’s easy to get lost in its narrow, bustling streets lined with red lanterns and ornate, ancient architecture. The marketplace is a paradise for those wanting to experience the flavors and crafts of old Shanghai. As you wander, your guide will point out the famous Yu Garden, a classical Chinese garden filled with ponds, rock formations, and pavilions that date back to the 16th century, offering a tranquil escape within the market’s chaos. Beyond the garden, you’ll explore Snack Street, a food lover’s dream where local delicacies like xiaolongbao (soup dumplings), shengjianbao (pan-fried dumplings), and osmanthus rice cakes are sold at every turn. The mix of sweet and savory aromas fills the air, and your guide will ensure you know the best local treats to try. You’ll also have the chance to buy handmade silk products, traditional teas, and Chinese souvenirs. This area perfectly encapsulates Shanghai’s rich blend of history, culture, and modern-day vibrancy.
In the afternoon, prepare to step back in time as you explore the Old French Concession, a charming district known for its European-style architecture, tree-lined avenues, and eclectic atmosphere. Once a French settlement, this area was home to foreign diplomats, wealthy merchants, and influential figures, and still retains much of its historical charm. The streets are lined with majestic Art Deco buildings, Shikumen houses, and boutique stores that mix modern fashion with a nostalgic touch. As you stroll through Fuxing Park, one of Shanghai’s oldest and most beloved green spaces, your guide will share stories of the district’s history, from its role in the early 20th century as a hub for foreign nationals to its transformation into a creative and trendy neighborhood. Along the way, you’ll pass by iconic spots like Café de la Paix and the former residence of Sun Yat-sen, where your guide will provide historical context. The area is now home to bustling cafés, art galleries, and independent boutiques, making it a perfect place to unwind while soaking in the city’s rich heritage. Whether stopping at a quaint coffee shop or shopping for one-of-a-kind art pieces, the Old French Concession is a must-see for those wanting a taste of Shanghai’s cosmopolitan past.
End your afternoon with a visit to Tianzifang, an artsy, bohemian neighborhood hidden away in the Old French Concession. Once a quiet residential area, Tianzifang has transformed into a vibrant labyrinth of narrow alleyways, boutique shops, art studios, and cafes. The charm of this place lies in its quirky, creative spirit, with each twist and turn offering something new to discover. As you wander through its maze of cobblestone streets, your guide will explain how this area is a blend of Shanghai’s traditional architecture, with its Shikumen style, and the youthful energy of the modern art scene. From local craftsmen making traditional crafts to contemporary artists showcasing their works, Tianzifang is an ever-evolving space that reflects Shanghai’s dynamic fusion of history and innovation. Here, you’ll find a range of items—from handmade jewelry and unique souvenirs to handcrafted tea sets and vintage furniture. Our 8-day trip to Shanghai, Xi 'an and Beijing was a perfect blend of history, culture and family fun.
The tour guides in every city are all excellent - their profound knowledge brings every scenic spot to life. Especially the tour guide in Beijing, she turned the halls of the Forbidden City into stories rather than just ruins. She is also very flexible. She would stop to satisfy the curiosity of our 7-year-old child or adjust her pace for grandma.
Drivers in every city are equally impressive: punctual, skilled, driving spotless and spacious vehicles.
The trip was very successful. Nanjing Road in Shanghai (perfect for children's snacks) and the vibrant gardens of Yu Garden strike a balance between modernity and tradition. The Muslim quarter in Xi 'an (Amazing street food!)" It feels amazing to see the awe-inspiring Terracotta Army. The cruise ships in the Summer Palace in Beijing and the echo Wall of the Temple of Heaven add a fun atmosphere.
Family-friendly touches are everywhere: gentle schedules, accessible paths at all stations, and meal options for picky eaters. Whether chasing pigeons at Tiananmen Square or savoring "sugar-coated haws on a stick" in Xi 'an, I feel very happy every day and not tired at all.
A seamless and unforgettable journey that delights people of all ages. 5/5 stars - Highly recommended!
Landing in China was kinda nerve-wracking, not gonna lie. The thought of tackling those cultural jumps and massive cities had us on edge. But teaming up with Your Way Holiday? Absolute game-changer.
Mike, our guide, was the hero we needed. Cool as can be, he reached out before we even took off, planning everything to fit us just right. More time at the Shanghai Museum or with the Terra-cotta Warriors? Mike made it happen, no sweat.
From Shanghai's neon lights to the ancient feel of Xian and the Great Wall's grandeur, this trip was custom-made for us. Mike showed us the best spots and local eats, even nailed the perfect spots for family pics.
The whole Your Way Holiday team was incredible, making city hops on bullet trains seamless and stress-free.
Huge thanks to Mike and the crew for an unforgettable China adventure. It was perfect, all thanks to their planning and flexibility. Can't wait for the next trip with you guys!
Hitting China for the first time, we were kinda stressed about getting around and diving into the local scene. That's where Jack from China Highlights swooped in and totally saved the day. He got in touch early, suggesting we kick off our adventures early to dodge the crowds – genius move!
From the get-go in Shanghai, zipping to Xian, and then landing in Beijing, Jack wasn’t just our guide; he felt more like part of the crew. He dished out cool stories at places like the Terra-cotta Warriors and the Great Wall, found us some awesome local spots to eat that worked with our food vibes, and even kept the kids pumped throughout the trip.
Honestly, we couldn't imagine tackling China's vibe without Jack. His smarts, vibe, and knack for making everything run smooth made our trip epic. And shoutout to the whole China Highlights team – the trip was planned out so well, everything just clicked into place. Big thanks, Jack, for showing us the best time!
Overall it's an absolutely unforgettable experience. From start to finish, this journey was marked by prompt and attentive responses from the YouWayHoliday team, making the planning process seamless and stress-free.
The highlight of this tour was undoubtedly the high-speed train travel. The efficiency and comfort of China's high-speed trains left me thoroughly impressed. They are exceptionally fast, whisking us from one city to another in no time. The trains were also impeccably clean, ensuring a pleasant and hygienic travel experience throughout the journey.
But what truly stole the show were the breathtaking landscapes and the rich history and culture of China. As a tourist, I was captivated by the stunning natural beauty that unfolded outside my window as the train traversed the countryside. From the serene landscapes around Shanghai to the majestic views near Xian, and finally, the iconic Great Wall of China on our way to Beijing, every moment was a picturesque delight.
Moreover, the profound historical and cultural immersion during this trip was awe-inspiring. Exploring the Terracotta Army in Xian and walking through the ancient hutongs of Beijing made me appreciate China's rich history and heritage on a whole new level. The local guides provided by YouWayHoliday were knowledgeable and passionate about sharing their insights, adding an enriching layer to our journey.
In conclusion, this 7-day high-speed train tour with YouWayHoliday was nothing short of incredible. I recently went on a family trip to China and used China Private Tours to organize our itinerary. Bonnie, our agent, was extremely helpful and responsive, making the booking process very easy.
All of our guides were fantastic, providing great recommendations for local food and being very professional and accommodating throughout our trip. The drivers were also very experienced and kept their cars very clean, ensuring our safety and comfort.
I want to give special recognition to three of our guides who really stood out. First, Sarah in Xi'an helped us tremendously when one of our friends had to return home due to a family emergency. She was able to arrange a flight for him that same evening, which was a huge relief for all of us.
Second, Lucy in Beijing was incredibly thoughtful and attentive. She arranged a birthday cake for my friend, which was a very nice surprise and made her feel very special.
Finally, Lily in Shanghai was a lot of fun and shared many interesting stories about growing up in the city. She was also very organized and considerate, making sure we got the best photo opportunities at all the sights we visited.
Overall, I would highly recommend China Private Tours for anyone planning a trip to China. The service and attention to detail were excellent, and we had a wonderful time thanks to the great work of Bonnie and her team.

Hello, I’m really hoping you have a trip starting on April 22nd, 23rd, or 24th that you can squeeze me on. I’m a solo traveler and I’d bought a tour through intrepid, but they canceled the tour on me and my flight (purchased separately) was non-refundable. I fly to Shanghai on April 22, 2023 and leave Beijing on April 30. I already have my visa and passport and I’m in good health and easy to work with.
Replied:11 March 2023
Dear Allison Loomis,
Thank you for reaching out to us. Unfortunately, we do not have a group tour available on the dates you mentioned (April 22nd, 23rd, or 24th) due to the low number of tourists during that period.
We are sorry to hear that your previously booked tour with Intrepid was canceled and understand how frustrating it must be to have a non-refundable flight. While we cannot accommodate you on a group tour, we would be happy to explore other options with you, such as arranging a private tour or recommending other activities to enjoy during your stay in China.
Please let us know if you would be interested in discussing these options further or if you have any other questions.
Thank you for considering us, and we hope to hear from you soon.
Regards
Sam

Bonnie has done a tremendous job in organizing my family's trip to China visiting Shanghai Beijing and Xian. She has been very prompt with her responses and has gone above and beyond to tailor our tour to suit our needs. It's made the online booking process so much easier for me. All the guides have given us good suggestions on where to eat and what local delicacies to try. We are happy with all the meals we had. All the guides were very professional and obliging.
All the guides could converse in English well. The drivers were very experienced and most diligent in maintaining the cleanliness of their cars. Thanks to them, we were able to ride safely and comfortably throughout the journey. (1)Tracy at Xi'an. On our 2nd day in Xi'an, one of our friends could not continue his trip and had to return home immediately due to an urgent family matter. Our tour guide, Tracy, was exceedingly helpful in arranging for my friend to return home at the earliest possible time. Thanks to her initiatives and coordination, my friend flew home on the same evening. At the same time, the rest of us could continue our journey without much disruptions. (2) Linda at Beijing. Linda was always thoughtful and attentive to our needs throughout the 3 days we spent together. She surprised us by arranging a cake for my friend, Louise, as soon as she knew it was her birtrhday on 22 Dec. We were very touched by her kind gesture (and that of the agency) and it meant so much to us that our dear friend's birthday was celebrated as a "grand affair" even when we are so far away from home. (3) Li Xia at Shanghai. Li Xia was absolutely fun to be with. She was more like a friend than a tour guide to us, not only briefing us on the background and history of places we visit but also sharing her experience growing up in Shanghai and working as a tour guide. Whenever the bus ride was long, she would keep us occupied by pointing out interesting sites along the way so that we would not feel bored. Her organisational skills were excellent as she could accomodate our various requests most of the time and she was especially considerate with our photography requirements, finding us the most scenic spots for the best photographs. Thank you very much to you and your colleagues for the wonderful arrangements.
I would highly recommend China Private Tours.
