Shanghai visited by 8.73 million tourists from other countries/regions in 2017

At a work meeting on tourism held on February 6, Shanghai municipal government reviewed the development of the city’s tourism sector of 2017 and unveiled the work plan of key tourism-related projects for 2018.

Statistics show that in 2017, the tourism sector generated total revenues of 448 billion yuan, up 15.7% over the previous year. On the domestic front, the revenues amounted to 402.5 billion yuan, up 16.9% over the previous year. The revenues in foreign currencies reached 6.81 billion USD, up 4.3% over the previous year. Domestic travelers to the city reached 318 million, up 7.5%, while travelers from other countries and regions, 8.73 million, up 2.2%, including overnight travelers reaching 7.19 million, up 4.2% over the previous year. The number of travelers from Shanghai to other countries and regions organized by travel agencies stood at 5.45 million, down 3.6% over the previous year. The average occupancy rate of the city’s star hotels was 68.8%, up 0.6 percentage points over the previous year, while that of the hotels of other types was 69.2%, up 1.7 percentage points over the previous year. The average room rate of star hotels was 713 yuan per night, up 3.1% over the previous year, while that of the hotels of other types was 452 yuan per night, up 11.2% over the previous year.

The targets for 2018 were clearly indicated at the meeting: travelers from other countries and regions reach 8.9 million, up 2% over this year; revenues in foreign currencies reach 6. 95 billion USD, up 2%; domestic tourists reach 334 million, up 5%; domestic tourism revenues amount to 445 billion yuan, up 10%; total revenues reach 492 billion yuan, up 10%.

For the future development of Shanghai’s tourism sector, Shanghai Municipal Tourism Administration will continue to set sights on endeavors to make Shanghai an appealing tourist destination, fostering a number of world-class tourism products, projecting the "Wonderful Shanghai, Quality Travel” image, increasing the contribution of the tourism sector to the city’s overall development, and creating a more traveler-friendly environment.
