Xintiandi gets festive for Chinese New Year

Xintiandi in Shanghai Huangpu District has been spruced up for the upcoming Chinese Lunar New Year, blending fashion and art with traditional Spring Festival celebrations.

An interactive zodiac-themed art installation to welcome the Year of the Rat is exhibited at the outdoor square of Xintiandi. Covering about 100 square meters, the installation designed by ENESS, an immersive art and design practice in Melbourne, Australia, is comprised of 12 giant inflatable mice. They wink and sing as people approach.

Meanwhile, a Spring Festival street has been decorated with red lanterns, Chinese knots, chunlian (Chinese New Year couplets) and the character fu, which means prosperity in Chinese.

Creative craft products are available at a Chinese Lunar New Year market in Xintiandi, and activities such as writing chunlian will be hosted regularly.

Visitors are also invited to create paper-cuts, red lanterns, tangyuan (glutinous rice balls with sweet or salty fillings) and flower lanterns at the market.

The celebration kicks off on Thursday night and will run through February 14.
